Researchers at the School of Life Sciences at Northumbria University found that cherry juice (specifically tested Montmorency cherry juice) increases the level of melatonin in the body.
This hormone helps regulate sleep.
They found that taking 30ml (1+ oz) of cherry juice twice daily for seven days made a big impact on the subjects’ sleep.
Their total sleep time increased by 25 minutes with a 5-6% increase in the actual sleep quality.
A measured 15-16% increase in urinary melatonin indicated the source of the sleep benefit.
Even the subjects napping during the day decreased over the pre-test levels.
